As a freshman making friends can be a concern if you aren't going to a local college or the same university as your best friend. Here are 5 ways SW recommends getting involved on your campus.
1. Join a club or organization. What are you personally interested in? Are you interested in business? Join the entrepreneurship club. Are you an awesome dancer? Join a dance team. Are you all about volunteering for causes? Find an organization that shares your same mission. How about music? Join a band or songwriting group. The opportunities are endless! Better yet, many universities and colleges allow students to start their own clubs and organizations and will even provide a budget for you.
2. Join a Sorority or Fraternity. Going Greek may be what is cool on your campus. You may be nominated to join or there may be an opportunity for open enrollment. Either way, Greek letter organizations are known for their academic and social activities. Think sorority sister events and Frat parties! Some chapter houses also provide housing and meals.
3. Attend Campus-wide Events. Most universities and campuses provide a huge variety of events to attend including movie nights, dance parties, comedy frenzies, all night dining buffets, carnivals, and celebrity and music artist appearances. The best part about this is many of the events are free! So grab a friend or go solo. You’ll be sure to see classmates and regulars on campus who you can mingle with and have a great time!
4. Hangout with your Roommates. Okay, it may sound like common sense. But, ask any SW member and we can tell you we’ve all had that roommate who has stayed in his or her dorm room except for attending class or going home on the weekends. Your roommate may not end up becoming your bestie, but he or she is your ultimate liaison in meeting other people you would not normally run into on a daily basis. So put your differences aside, grab your roommate, and get out there!
5. Join a Study Group. Everyone has that one subject that is challenging in every way. Join a study group and get to know your classmates better. Through helping each other learn subject matter, you’ll find your study sessions develop into candy wars and inside joke matches as you strive for that perfect “A.” And who says study groups have to take place in your campus library? Switch it up by meeting in the quad, your dorm, the café, or even the local bar or restaurant.
